A Sustainable Construction Project
As part of its institutional master plan, Northeastern University considered using shipping containers as a sustainable and economical construction material for a temporary building that would house the Khoury College of Computer and Information Sciences.
LEE²DESIGN collaborated with New York firm LOT-EK, and served as the executive architect on the project, to investigate various schemes that would meet the programmatic needs of the college while also responding to the site’s surrounding context. Because it was located on 452 Huntington Avenue, a prominent corner across from the MFA and alongside a major traffic artery in Boston, only an iconic design would suit the building’s role as a gateway to the Northeastern University Campus. Thus, the proposed shipping container structure was a highly visible, contemporary translation of a traditional academic facility. While the project remained hypothetical, it was nevertheless a valuable exploration of an innovative and environmentally conscious building strategy.
