WHO WE ARE

Lee²Design | JLA+D

The diverse personal experience and professional expertise that Kathrin & Justin bring to their practice enable them to recognize and address all aspects of a project regardless of its nature and scale. They strive to ensure that a first-time residential client feels as confident in the architectural design process as an institutional client looking for a landmark building. Every person is unique, as is every project. This ideology is the foundation of every LEE²DESIGN design.

Justin founded the JLA+D Architecture Studio in 2015, with a strong focus on museum and exhibition design. Prior to starting his own studio, he worked with the Italian Star Architect Renzo Piano on high-profile projects including the California Academy of Sciences, the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, and the Harvard Art Museums. With 18+ years of experience, Justin is keenly attuned to the complexity and intricacy of institutional projects, as well as the steps required to successfully execute a project in collaboration with design teams, clients, engineers, and contractors, from the conception of a design to its eventual construction and materialization.

Kathrin, a German designer and architectural engineer, has similarly extensive project experience. Throughout her career, she has specialized in the rehabilitation of existing structures and has worked on a variety of project scopes, from identifying client goals and conducting feasibility studies to architectural design and construction completion. Her work includes redevelopment planning, rehabilitating existing masonry and facades, renovating various educational facilities, and retrofitting existing interiors according to new programmatic needs. In her work, she addresses concerns regarding sustainability and environmental impact, and time and time again, her designs exceed the both functional and aesthetic expectations of her clients.

When Kathrin joined in 2018 to work with Justin as a husband & wife team, LEE²DESIGN was born. Their boutique studio completes interior renovations, furniture designs, new additions, full buildings, exhibition spaces, and master planning, delivering thoughtful and inspired design solutions at every scale.

LEE²DESIGN is a certified Minority Business Enterprise, recognized by the State of Massachusetts. With our commitment to diversity, we make a valuable contribution to every project we work on.

Professional Architecture Licensure.

We hold Architecture Licenses in Massachusetts, New York, and Florida, allowing us to act as the Architect of Record for projects in these jurisdictions.

Guest Lectures and Student Workshops.

From guest lectures at the Harvard Graduate School of Design to working with the architecture students at the Francisco Marroquín University in Guatemala City, we enjoy the exchange with bright young minds and support them in the development of their skills and ideas.

WHAT INSPIRES US...

Individuality

Inspiration for a transitional exterior home remodel in New York

Every person is unique. As such, we make sure our designs reflect the distinctive characteristics and needs of our clients.

Those Before Us

An important part of growing is recognizing just how much we learned from those who came before us. Our studio continues to take inspiration from those leaders.

Attention to Detail

An exceptional design is determined by its smallest details. Through meticulous involvement we ensure that every aspect of a project is executed with care and precision.

What Comes Next

Invention never stops, so we keep an eye on new technologies, materials, and approaches that could push our designs forward.

The Genius of Nature

As architects, we always strive to innovate, but we invariably acknowledge the natural world as the most inspiring designer of all time.

Relationships

Successful projects are dependent on strong relationships. We appreciate and continue to learn from each other as well as from our clients, design partners, and collaborators.
