A Gut-Renovation
While at German architecture firm Hüdepohl Ferner, Kathrin Lee of LEE²DESIGN worked on a renovation of a local secondary school in the town of Georgsmarienhütte, Germany. In the initial stage of the project, a feasibility study was conducted to document deficiencies and determine how to phase the retrofit of the entire school. Kathrin and her team decided to focus on the south wing first, as the problems there were the most pressing. The following gut-renovation included substantial toxic material abatement, implementation of fire protection measures, better insulation, new windows, and a fiber cement facade that maintained continuity with the previously renovated adjacent assembly hall. Additionally, by redesigning the interior with thoughtful color palettes, resilient wall finishes and new linoleum flooring, the team created a welcoming learning environment to meet the students' everyday needs.
