A New Spatial Typology
LEE²DESIGN collaborated with an online education startup to enhance the learning experience of public school students in low-income neighborhoods who, due to a shortage of teachers, were taking online classes in in-person classrooms.
The goal of the project was to define a new spatial typology for this in-person/online hybrid system by transforming bare physical classrooms into warm, inspired spaces. Using a bleak room with concrete walls and no windows as our pilot site, we added natural wooden slats to the walls, botanical graphic accents beside the slats, and dynamic LED light fixtures to the ceiling. The result provided underprivileged students taking online classes with access to a vibrant, welcoming school environment, allowing them to thrive mentally and academically.
