A Parametric Design and Prototype Production Project
LEE²DESIGN worked with Evergreen Jingdezhen Ceramic Company as the design consultant for a porcelain facade research project in SoHo, New York. We were responsible for developing the complex geometry of the building facade designed by the project architect BKSK and for determining the feasibility of installing this facade as produced by Evergreen Jingdezhen Ceramics.
The facade design in our research involved roughly 4000 individual porcelain tiles of various sizes up to 30” by 30”, 85% of them being unique and each carrying distinctive twisting 3D geometrical patterns of surface ornament that were based off of existing designs on adjacent buildings. Over the course of the project, LEE²DESIGN constructed a digital model, coordinated with the fabricator in Shanghai to route the ABS positives for mold fabrication, and assisted in achieving the aesthetic requirements set by the owner in Evergreen’s factory in China. LEE²DESIGN also served as a local representative for the fabrication team, collaborating with the project architect, the facade engineer, the developer and the owner.
