Harvard Art Museums Public Space Design

A Furniture Design Project

LEE²DESIGN worked with the museum leadership to evaluate and redesign the lobby space on the lower level of the Harvard Art Museums. The design was intended to transform the lobby into a multi-use space that would support students during the day and facilitate cultural events at night. As such, the proposed concept took the form of an elongated table where students could study, charge their devices, wait for classes, and talk with their schoolmates that could also convert into a bar countertop to accommodate the various events hosted by the Harvard Art Museums. Made out of straight timber strips that rotated along a single axis to create dynamic curved surfaces, the design of the table alluded to the timber facades on the exterior of the Museums, maintaining a sense of visual cohesion.
