Johnson Museum of Art

A Gallery Renovation Project

The Study Gallery at The Herbert Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University is a new educational facility designed by LEE²DESIGN that functions as both a classroom where professors can utilize original works of art as teaching tools and as a gallery space where the museum can showcase its work during non-academic periods.

To address these conflicting programmatic needs, LEE²DESIGN worked with the museum staff to create a kit of parts custom millwork elements that can be configured to cater to either use of the space. Paintings and scrolls can be easily and flexibly hung on the full-width slat wall with custom-designed security hangers, while works on paper can be displayed on removable slanted wood panels placed on the countertop. Undercounter cabinets provide plenty of storage space for supplies and educational equipment and the center work table fosters a collaborative environment for class discussions about the original art. The result is an adaptable and highly innovative space that promotes the intersection of art and hands-on learning.
